John Brown (1800 - 1859) was a famous and controversial American abolitionist who advocated and practiced armed insurrection. He led the Pottawatomie Massacre and the unsuccessful raid at Harpers Ferry. He was tried and executed for treason, murder, and conspiracy. No photographer credited, undated.
