Caption: Edison's Phonograph. In 1877 Thomas Edison filed a patent on a machine that could record and play back sound. He demonstrated this simple device by reciting the poem Mary had a little lamb. His voice caused the membrane in the microphone to vibrate. A stylus attached to the membrane drew grooves of varying depth in a sheet of tinfoil wrapped around a rotating cylinder which moved along the microphone with the stylus.
