TOMÁS CARLOS CAPUZ (1834-1899). SPANISH ENGRAVER. RAFAEL MONLEÓN Y TORRES (1843-1900). SPANISH ARTIST.. Gravina (1882). Iron-hulled, unarmoured cruiser. Shipwreck of the Spanish cruiser 'Gravina' during its route from Manila to Shanghai on 10 July 1884 due to a typhoon on Fuga Island, in the Babuyan archipelago, when it was heading for the Strait of Formosa in Musa Bay, north of Luzon (Philippines). A large part of the crew was saved thanks to the heroic action of the navy doctor Eugenio Fernández Valdés, who managed to get a cable until the island and secure it, after several officers had failed and died in the attempt. The ship was commanded by frigate captain José García de Quesada. Rescue of the crew by means of the cable brought ashore. Drawing by Rafael Monleón. Engraving by Tomás Carlos Capuz (1834-1899). The Spanish and American Illustration (La Ilustración Española y Americana). September 22, 1884.
