Philip Henry Sheridan, Union general, 1862-1867. In the American Civil War Sheridan (1831-1888) rose to the rank of Major-general in the Union (northern) army, and commanded the Army of the Shenandoah Valley from 1864. In 1883 he was made commanding general of the US Army. An engraving from volume III of The War with the South : a History of the Late Rebellion, by Robert Tomes, Benjamin G Smith, New York, Virtue & Yorston, 3 Volumes, 1862-1867.
