IVAN PETROVICH PAVLOV

Ivan Petrovich Pavlov (1849-1936), Russian physiologist and experimental psychologist wo received the 1904 Nobel Prize for his work on the physiology of the digestive glands. As director of Physiology at Leningrads Institute for Experimental medicine, Pavlov experimented on nervous stimulation of gastric secretions. His work revealed the conditioned reflex, which was later seen as supporting Behaviorism. His work also showed that specific areas in the cerebral cortex were concerned with specific reflexes. A mechanistic theory of human behavior came into vogue as a result of his findings.
