John Stuart Blackie (1809-1905)

John Stuart Blackie (1809-1905) Scottish classicist and man of letters, born in Glasgow. Professor of Greek at Edinburgh University 1852-1882. Instrumental in the foundation of a Celtic chair at Edinburgh. Politically radical and nationalistic, he was a well-known Edinburgh figure in his broad-brimmed hat and wearing a plaid over his shoulder like a shepherd.
