Charles Julius Guiteau (1841-1882) American lawyer known for the assassination of the United States President James A. Garfield on July 2, 1881. Charles Guiteau Trial (November 14, 1881-January 13, 1882). The trial was opened November 14, 1881, in Washington, D.C. District of Columbia. Attempt on Guiteau's life on November 19, 1881. Guiteau was being returned to his jail cell after a day in court. The police van across the streetcar tracks at 1st and East Capitol Street, a lone horseman rode up next to the wagon fired one quick shot. The bullet nicking GuiteauÕs arm, but otherwise caused no harm. A policeman officer, seated next to the driver, turned and fired at the assailant, but missed. The police lost him. Engraving by Capuz.
