Elizabeth Hughes Gossett

Elizabeth Evans Hughes Gossett (1907-1981). Elizabeth Evans Hughes, daughter of Charles Evans Hughes, then Governor of NY, was one of the first diabetics to be treated regularly with insulin, starting in 1922 after a visit to Dr. Frederick Banting in Toronto. She had been diagnosed with diabetes in 1919, and had been on a strictly controlled diet for three years, which resulted in weight loss and poor health. The insulin injections enabled her to return to school and a normal life. Hughes married William T. Gossett, a lawyer and vice president of the Ford Motor Company . This photograph was taken around 1930.
