Charles Richard Drew, Surgeon

Charles Richard Drew (1904-1950), African-American physician, surgeon and medical researcher. Drew improved techniques for blood storage and blood transfusion, which helped save many lives during World War II. He was the first black surgeon to serve as an examiner on the American Board of Surgery. Painting by Betsy Graves Reyneau.
