The 'Penny Sit-Up', Salvation Army shelter, Blackfriars, London, c1900 (1901). The Penny Sit-Up, one of the first homeless shelters to be created in Blackfriars, was operated by the Salvation Army during the late 19th century and early 20th century as a response to the high rates of homelessness due to eviction orders.
