Caption:
Sir Charles Reed, chairman of the London School Board, 1880. He was instrumental in the setting up of a free public library in the City of London, after a pamphlet he wrote advocating such a scheme was published. After being elected as the member for Hackney on the first London School Board in 1870, he became the vice-chairman, and chairman of the works committee. In 1873 he became chairman of the board, and remained so until his death. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
