Terracotta lekythos (oil jar). Culture: Greek, Attic. Dimensions: H. 10 15/16 in. (27.8 cm) diameter 3 11/16 in. (9.4 cm). Date: ca. 480-470 B.C.. Nike with an oinochoe (jug) above an altar The point of reference for a vase such as this one is difficult to identify. The image probably represents a libation offered for a victory. It is unclear whether the lekythos was purely funerary in function. If so, the vase may have served for the burial of an athlete.
