MACARTHUR MEETS EMPEROR'S BOYS TOKYO, JAPAN.....The first meeting of Arthur MacArthur, son of the Supreme Allied Commander in Japan, and Crown Prince Akihito, son of Emperor Hirohito, during the long occupation of Japan is recorded here. The boys met last September 10 in a box at the Meiji Swimming Stadium, during the All-Japan Intercollegiate Swimming Meet. Young MacArthur tried to start a conversation but the Crown Prince, four years older, was sensitive about the language and begged off explaining his English was not very good. Left to right are Arthur MacArthur, Crown Prince Akihito and his brother Masahito. The meeting was unplanned. Takizo Matsumoto, Harvard-trained Japanese Parliament Member from Hiroshima invited Arthur to the event and led him to the box where the Emperor's sons were watching the swimming events. 3.9.50.
