Graywacke, New York State

Graywacke (or greywacke) is an old term describing a dark colored gritty sandstone, usually cemented with abundant clay minerals and silica. Graywacke is characterized by a range in constituent grain sizes, but invariably set into a hard, compact matrix. Many graywackes are associated with old formations that have been deeply buried.
