Battle of Crecy, France, August 1346 (1864). A major engagement of the Hundred Years War between England and France (1337-1453). Edward III of England and his son Edward, the Black Prince, led their army of some 12,000 men to victory over Philip VI of France and his army of 30,000-40,000. The English longbowmen played a decisive role in gaining the victory.
