Streptococcus Pneumoniae

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a gram-positive bacteria often found in chains or pairs. Streptococcus is part of the normal human bacterial flora, and as such, is carried by many without causing infection. However, in immune compromised individuals it can infect the upper respiratory tract, causing pneumonia. It may also infect other parts of the body, causing bacterial blood poisoning (bacteraemia) and meningitis.
