Tinsley Viaduct on the M1 after completion, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, 1968. Artist: Michael Walters

Tinsley Viaduct on the M1 after completion, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, 1968. The twin cooling towers of Blackburn Meadows Power Station which many travellers heading north used as a landmark were still working at the time, but were demolished in 2008. The once great steelworks of Meadowhall can be seen on the right of the bridge. This monument to Sheffield's steel industry also marked its decline, as the steelworks headed for recession and eventual closure in the early 1980s.
