Taste bud anatomy. Diagram of the anatomical structure of a taste bud on a tongue. Chemicals to be sensed enter the taste bud through the opening (blue arrow at top center), and trigger a response in the synapse sensory cells (gold color). The signals are then passed to the brain through the gustatory nerve (at bottom) and interpreted as taste sensations.
