Orig. bildtext... ADMIRAL YONAI TAKES HELM OF JAPAN GOVERNMENT TOKYO, JAN. 1940 Tokyo,Jan.15.... Succeeding Prime Minister Nobuyuki Abe, whose Cabinet resigned en bloc on January 14th, Admiral Mitsumasa Yonai, 62, three times Navy Minister (successively in the Hayashi, Konoye and Hiranuma Cabinets, Feb.2,1937, to Aug.28,1939), was appointed by the Emperor on the evening of the same day to the premiership, and completed the organization of his Cabinet today. The new Premier is a man of sterling character, quiet disposition, moderate views, excellent phusique, and respected by all classes of the people of Japan. His appointment, which is backed by popular approval, marks his retirement from active duty in the Navy, of which he was one of the most important and valuable leaders, so much so as to win him a place in naval circles approximating that which the late revered Admiral Togo occupied.
