Princess Goes Down A Mine - H.R.H. Princess Margaret carrying miner's helmet, photographed after ascending from the pit at Calverton Colliery, Nottinghamshire. On Wednesday April 7th, H.R.H. Princess Margaret descended the Calverton Coal-mine, Nottinghamshire, one of the most modern in Britain, at her own request. Wearing a white overall and with a miner's helmet over her gaily-coloured head-scarf, the Princess inspected the colliery and saw miners using modern electrical coal-cutting machines at the coal-face. Her Royal Highness "mined" herself a piece of coal as a souvenir, with a pick. April 07, 1954. (Photo by Paul Popper Ltd.).
