Title: Streak: Hematite and Malachite
Caption: Streak is the color of a mineral powder. In many cases the apparent body color of a mineral is very different from its powder. Black hematite (left in photo) has a red streak. The green streak of malachite (right), however, is similar to its body color. A 'streak plate' is a hard porcelain tile that mineralogists typically use to create a powder when a mineral specimen is rubbed against it.
