Roman Quadriga. The chariot is racing along the spina in the centre of the circus on one of its seven laps; the driver is about to turn left-handed round the turning-posts. His reins are Y-shaped, the two ends meeting at the withers. The charioteer thus holds a single rein for each horse, whose head he cannot turn.
