PIETRO DOVIZIELLI. TEMPLE OF VESTA

Temple of Vesta. Artist: Pietro Dovizielli (Italian, 1804-1885). Dimensions: Mount: 19 3/8 in. × 27 1/16 in. (49.2 × 68.7 cm)
Image: 11 9/16 × 15 1/2 in. (29.3 × 39.3 cm). Date: 1850s.
Dovizielli was awarded a bronze medal at the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris, where he exhibited twelve views of Rome and its environs. One French critic mused, "How can one not admire the luminous and warm-toned photographs exhibited by Mr. Dovizielli of Rome?" In this view of the second-century b.c. Temple of Vesta (now known as the Temple of Hercules Victor, or Round Temple), the classical structure and its nearby fountain seem to be composed of shimmering planes of light.
