William Bowman, Fellow of the Royal Society, 1880. In 1839 he became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. The following year he was appointed junior demonstrator of anatomy and curator of the museum at King's College. He became full surgeon to the hospital in 1856. In 1846 he had become assistant surgeon to the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital, Moorfields; and  became full surgeon in 1851. Bowman became the leading opthalmic surgeon in London. He also took an interest in nurse training and was instrumental in setting up St John's House, and the Nightingale Fund Council.
