VAN HALEN FRANCISCO DE PAULA, SPANISH ARTIST. SERRA and SPANISH ENGRAVER. Spain. Events of La Granja (1832). Conspiracy carried out by supporters of Carlos María Isidro, the king's brother, to abolish the Pragmatic Sanction of 1789 that Ferdinand VII had just enacted on 29 March 1830. It allowed women to reign if they had no male siblings, making Ferdinand VII's daughter, Isabella, the legitimate heiress to the Spanish throne in detriment of Carlos María Isidro. This caused a civil war, the First Carlist War, as Isabella was not recognised as the heiress to the throne by the supporters of Carlos María Isidro, known as Carlists. King Ferdinand VII (1784-1833) hands over Doña María Cristina the Decree of 6 October 1832, by virtue of which, due to his illness, he delegated government matters to her. Illustration by Francisco de Paula Van Halen. Engraving by Serra. Panorama Español, Crónica Contemporánea. Madrid, 1842.
