House in which Admiral Benbow was born

The house at Coton Hill near Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, in which Admiral Benbow was born. John Benbow (1653-1702) English naval commander, Vice-Admiral 1701. In the West Indies, off Santa Marta, he encountered superior French forces under Du Casse on 19 August 1702. His leg was shattered by chain-shot and, deserted by his captains, he died in Jamaica of his wounds in October. Remembered as 'Brave Benbow'.
