Silver Mining, Potosi

The city of Potosi lies at the foot of the Cerro Rico, or 'rich mountain,' in Bolivia. The mountain was mined for silver from the middle of the 16th century until the end of the 18th century when the region was part of the Spanish empire. The Spanish engineers (in the foreground) used Incan slaves to mine the raw silver ore from the mines sunk into the mountain.
