Crampton's railway locomotive engine, 1866. Artist: GB Smith

Crampton's railway locomotive engine, 1866. The locomotive represented by this model was designed and built by Thomas Russell Crampton for the Northern Railway of France. The distinctive position of the boiler and driving axle kept the centre of gravity low, which added stability at speed. Locomotives of this design hauled French expresses from 1849 to about 1876. A print from Cyclopaedia of Useful Arts, Mechanical and Chemical, Manufactures, Mining, and Engineering, edited by Charles Tomlinson, Volume II, Virtue and Co, London, 1866.
