Dr Elpidio Quirino, vice president and Foreign Minister of the Republic of the Philippines, Russia London airport today. The Philippines, with a population of 70 million became formally independent less than a year ago, and the new Republic remains in close treaty Association with the United States, particularly with regard to the use by the US military of bases in the islands.Dr Elpidio Quirino wife and 3 of his 5 children were massacred by the Japanese in Manila as the US forces were approaching the city. His 2 surviving children have come to London with him. 2 June 1947.
