WILLIAM BLAKE. 'Flagellation of a Female Samboe Slave', 1806. The slave is tied from a branch of a tree in an obvious state of distress and pain. In the background are colonial men giving orders to other slaves who hold long whips. From Narrative of a Five Years Expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam 1772-77, an indictment of slavery by John Gabriel Stedman. (London 1793).
