Major-General Hector Archibald MacDonald, British soldier, 1902. Artist: Elliott & Fry

Major-General Hector Archibald MacDonald, British soldier, 1902. 'Fighting Mac' (1853-1903), a distinguished but controversial officer in the British army, rose from a private in the 92nd Highlanders to general before taking his own life. There were rumours, possibly unfounded, that he was a homosexual; he was also depressed and suffering from dysentery.
