Baptism of Virginia Dare, Roanoke Colony,1587

Baptism of Viriginia Dare, the first baby born to English settlers in Roanoke, in 1587, and the granddaughter of John White. The settlement at Roanoke disappeared after two years and no one knows what became of the colonists. Some believe they went "native" to survive. Dare has become an enduring character in American folklore. The first colony on Roanoke Island was established by governor Ralph Lane in 1585. Following the failure of the 1585 settlement, a second colony led by John White landed on the same island in 1587, and became known as the Lost Colony due to the unexplained disappearance of its population. Engraving by William Ludwell Sheppard, 1876.
