Frederick Max Muller, Professor of Comparative Philology at Oxford University, 1878. He prepared the first edition of the Sacred Hymns of the Brahmans, the Sanskrit Rig-Veda between 1849 and 1974. During a 25 year career at Oxford  he promoted the comparative study of Indo-European languages and mythology and religion. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
