A Korean bamboo flute: the Daegeum

The daegeum is a large bamboo flute, a transverse flute used in traditional Korean music. It is specific to Korea as it is not found in China nor in Japan. At one-third of the distance from the end of this flute is a hole called Chong, which is covered with a thin membrane taken from a reed. This fibre vibrates and produces a blaring sound. It is used in court, aristocratic, and folk music, as well as in contemporary classical music, popular music, and film scores.
