Caption: Some arid regions owe their dryness to the configuration of the relief around them. When a mountain chain borders a coastal area, it removes, by orographic precipitation, much of the humidity contained in the oceanic air masses. Regions. in the lee of this mountainous barrier therefore receive very little precipitation. This is the case in the Patagonia, Great Basin, and Gobi deserts.
