Bartolomeu Portugues, Portuguese Buccaneer

Bartolomeu Português (16??-1669) was a Portuguese buccaneer who attacked Spanish ships in the 1660s. He established one of the earliest sets of rules popularly known as "the Pirate's Code." It was later used by 18th-century pirates such as John Phillips, Edward Low, and Bartholomew Roberts. Engraving from Alexandre Exquemelin's Buccaneers of America, 1678.
