Job on the Dung Heap, an illumination by Jean Bourdichon, (French, 1457-1521) from c.1480-1485. Job is the central character of the Book of Job in the Old Testament. The story is also related in the Quran. In the Bible, Job is presented as a family man who lives a good and prosperous life, but is beset with disasters that take away all he has, including his family, his health, and his property. Job struggles to understand his misfortune and is eventually restored to prosperity by God.
