WWII, Hiroshima, Aftermath of Atomic Bomb, 1945

An aerial view of Hiroshima, Japan, one year after the first atomic bomb was dropped on August 6th, 1945. This single nuclear bomb (nicknamed "Little Boy") destroyed almost all of the city's houses and buildings and instantly killed 80,000 people. The death toll continued to rise over the years, as survivors contracted cancers associated with radiation; ultimately the bomb claimed over 200,000 lives. Here, one year after the bombing, the T-shaped bridge, which was the aiming point for the bomb, is still standing in a dilapidated condition. Newly-built houses can be seen in the foreground.
