Detroit, Michigan: May 23, 1972 A crash test dummy demonstrates what happens when an air bag fails to deploy. At left it slams into the windshield and steering column in a 30 mph crash, and then bounces back into the seat while pieces of windshield fly through the air. The unopened air bag hangs from the steering wheel.
