A woodcut engraving depicting Santorio Santorio's clinical thermometer. The globular end was placed in the patient's mouth and the other end in a bowl of water. The serpentine thermometer was graduated with glass beads. Santorio Santorio (1561-1636) a Venetian physiologist, physician and professor. Dated 17th century.
