Mission commander Eileen M. Collins on STS-093

Shuttle commander Collins. Mission commander Eileen M. Collins on board space shuttle Columbia during mission STS-93. Collins was the first female mission commander of a space mission. Mission STS-93 took place between 23rd-27th July 1999. The main purpose of the mission was the deployment of the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the most powerful X-ray telescope ever built. It will study X-ray sources such as prospective black holes. Also on board Columbia were pilot Jeffrey S. Ashby and mission specialists Steven A. Hawley, Catherine G. Coleman and Michel Tognini. Tognini was representing France's Center National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES).
