The twin battles of Jena and Auerstedt were fought near the river Saale (in Germany), between the forces of Napoleon I of France and Frederick William III of Prussia. Prussian military leader Charles William Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick (1735-1806) was blinded in the battle and died soon after.
