This is a typical Ottoman presentation saber of the seventeenth century. Many similar weapons, as well as shields and complete horse trappings similiarly mounted in silver-gilt and set with jade plaques and turquoise, were taken as booty after the unsuccessful Turkish seige of Vienna in 1683.
