Auction in progress at Phillips auctioneers, London, c1901 (1901). Phillips is an auction house founded in 1796 in London by Harry Phillips, a former clerk to James Christie. The business held twelve auctions in its first year and soon became successful. Napoléon Bonaparte (1769-1821) and Beau Brummel (1778-1840) were among the early patrons.
