Title: Burgess Shale arthropod
Caption: Dorsal reconstruction of the marine arthropod, Emeraldella brocki, from the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale of British Columbia. Although not shown in the photograph, the ventral surface of fossil specimens reveals a series of segmented, spiny appendages with overlapping gill flaps. With no evidence of eyes, this arachnomorph must have sensed its prey by means of its long antennae. Fossils range in length from 11 to 65 mm (excluding the posterior spine).
