Altamura painter, fragment of a chalice crater (Apollo, Artemis and Leto at the sacrifice, Dionysos and Mänade), clay, quickly turned, painted (ceramic), alternately fired, clay, painted and fired, total: height: 25.5 cm; diameter: 41 cm, ceramic, history of Apollo (Phoebus), history of Diana (Artemis), Latona (Leto), history of Bacchus (Dionysus), maenad, bacchantine, palmette (ornament), kithara, mandolin, guitar, balalaika, strict style, Only the upper part of an Attic-red figured goblet crater of the Altamura painter has survived, with the picture and the border closed with a palmette band. With the niobide painter and polygnot, the Altamura painter is one of the three most important vase painters of the monumental style that began in the early classical period. Side A shows the deities Apollo, Artemis and Leto drinking libation at an altar. Apollo is clothed with a long chiton and a chlamys (cloak) draped over his left shoulder. He has turned his head back. The hair, which falls in long curls down to the back, is held by a laurel wreath or diadem. On the outstretched right he balances a flat donation bowl (Phiale), with the left a large kithara. In front of him there is a small altar of sacrifice with flames painted in red. On the left follows a female figure in long chiton and with a cloak. The hair is held by a diadem. She holds a large laurel branch in her left hand. With the jug in her right hand she pours liquid on the altar. On the right behind Apollo there is a second female figure in a long chiton and cloak. In her right hand she stretches a jug towards Apollo. Even though the two female figures are not marked by attributes, they can be named in connection with the god Apollo, recognizable by the cithara, the long robe and the laurel, as his sister Artemis and his mother Leto. On side B, the wine god Dionysus and a woman face each other. The woman on the left is clothed with a long chiton and a cloak over her shoulder. The hair falling on her back is h.
