He knocked over his French guide, Michel Croz, and their weight on the rope pulled off the next man, a 36 year old country parson called Charles Hudson, and the fourth climber as well, Lord Francis Douglas, younger brother of the Marquess of Queensbury. Above him, the remaining three men dug in and the rope tightened - then snapped - leaving them to watch in horror as the bodies of their companions cartwheeled thousands of feet down the mountain.
