The Garden of Love. Nuremberg, about 1460. The success of decorative tapestry can be partially explained by its portability. Kings and noblemen could roll up and transport tapestries from one residence to another. In churches, they were displayed on special occasions. Tapestries were also draped on the walls of castles for insulation during winter, as well as for decorative display. Tapestry weave; linen warp and weft of colored wool white linen and silver membrane. 25 5/8 x 55 1/2 in. (65x 141cm). Nuremberg, Germanisches National Museum.
