'Entrance to a Sap along the French Front', First World War, 1915, (c1920). 'The mine subsequently exploded in this sap killed a great number of Germans'. A 'sap' was a covered trench, dug by 'sappers', often experienced civilian miners. These trench were filled with explosives and detonated, followed by an attack on the surprised survivors from the destroyed position.
