gneiss rock

Gneiss rock. Gneiss is a metamorphic rock that forms under pressure deep inside the Earth, altering existing igneous or sedimentary rocks. Here, white bands are seen running through the gneiss. Subsequent movements of the Earth and erosion have brought the gneiss to the surface. Photographed on Spitsbergen Island, part of the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean.
